Clientele with the following challenges are seen at BC Speech, Language and Communication: Autism, developmental delays, cognitive delays, learning disabilities, hearing loss, Cerebral Palsy, Brain Injury, Apraxia/Dyspraxia of Speech, Attention Deficit Disorder, emotional and behavioural problems, cleft palates/lips, various syndromes, prenatal exposure to drugs and/or alcohol, English as a second language issues, and specific speech/language delays.
Initial, free phone-based consultations are conducted with potential clients in order to determine whether or not a client needs a diagnostic assessment, and the type of assessment that is needed. These consultations are also used to enroll potential clients in therapeutic intervention services.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) includes aided or unaided communication modes that are used as a supplement to oral language. These include the use of pictures, the alphabet and devices such as tablets with synthetic speech and/or digitized speech.
Speech-language counselling is provided on an ongoing basis to clients’ families and to clients themselves, when appropriate, to address emotionally charged issues related to the communication challenge at hand.
